The most and maybe the longest awaited application for Symbian UIQ devices, new web browser for smartphones Opera Mobile 9.5 has been released... Well, the version isn't final, it's beta but more important is that it was released and now, final version is just a matter of time.

Besides of the web browser, Opera mobile 9.5 Beta comes with Opera Widgets - handy small programs which you can download free and use on your desktop, mobile phone or TV. The good thing is that, we don't need to wait for Widgets especially for Opera Mobile, it runs already available Widgets for desktop Opera Browser.

As I said, Opera Mobile 9.5b is a Beta version and as everyone knows there is no bug free beta versions and there already are several known issues:

  • The browser sets a new system-wide home-page, which cannot be opened by the embedded Internet browser (Opera 8.65).
  • Cursor is not shown when HTML edit fields are partially out of screen.
  • No support for landscape screen mode due to a number of system issues with the OpenGL graphical engine.
  • Browser plug-ins are disabled by default due to non-existent or incomplete system support for Flash content. They can be enabled by the user for experimental purposes only, via More -> Tools -> Change settings -> Advanced -> Allow plug-ins.
  • The continuous browser usage experience might be affected by the amount of available phone RAM memory.
Opera Mobile 9.5b Beta is free and you can download it from HERE ...

The consolidated financial summary for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson) for the third quarter ended September 30, 2008 is as follows:

Units shipped in the quarter were 25.7 million, a sequential increase but flat year-on-year, while sales for the quarter were Euro 2,808 million, a decrease of 10% compared to the third quarter of 2007.  Most of this decrease reflects the impact of exchange rate fluctuations, as well as a shift of the product mix to more lower priced phones. Gross margin also decreased year-on-year and sequentially due to continued price pressure at a time of adverse cost trends in the supplier base.  This was partially mitigated by the introduction of new products at the end of the second quarter, such as the C902 Cyber-shot camera phone, which is selling well; however, strong competition continues, particularly in Europe. Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 12 million, excluding restructuring charges of Euro 35 million, a decrease compared to the third quarter of 2007.

Average selling price (ASP) for Sony Ericsson decreased both sequentially and year-on-year in line with levels seen in previous quarters. This is due to selling more lower priced phones and increased price competition in the market for mid- to high-end phones. Sequentially, market share for the third quarter remained flat and is estimated to be around 8%.
“As expected the third quarter has continued to be challenging for Sony Ericsson.  We have moved forward with our plans to align operations and resources with the consolidation of R&D facilities into a more agile and cost efficient organisational structure. As previously announced, our target remains to reduce operating expenses by Euro 300 million annually by the end of the second quarter 2009, with the full effects expected to appear in the second half of 2009.These plans are progressing in line with expectations,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “We are committed to executing our alignment plan as speedily as possible to ensure we have the right size and organisational structure to return the business to healthy profitability.”
During the third quarter Sony Ericsson announced PlayNow plus, the next step in its music service offering. PlayNow plus is a high speed and high quality music download service for both the phone and PC that will launch in the fourth quarter with Telenor in Sweden with a special edition Sony Ericsson W902 Walkman phone integrated with the PlayNow plus service. Further roll-outs of the service are planned with other network partners around the world in early 2009.

Sony Ericsson also announced a number of new phones in the quarter, including three new Walkman phones, its first UMA handset (G705u) and the first models with integrated You Tube connectivity (W595, W902, G705). In addition, Sony Ericsson started a major marketing initiative to launch its first multimedia convergence phone under the new sub-brand; Xperia, and started shipping the phone, the Xperia X1, at the end of the quarter.

As communicated previously, Sony Ericsson paid a second dividend to the parent companies totalling Euro 300 million (Euro 150 million each) in the quarter based on 2007 earnings, and at the end of September 2008 Sony Ericsson had net cash of Euro 1.4 billion.

Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2008 will grow at a rate of around 10% from more than 1.1 billion units in 2007, while the industry ASP will continue to decline. The majority of this growth is expected to be in emerging markets where lower priced phones dominate.

Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Mobile Event Guide, its new initiative to be launched for the first time at the Sony Ericsson Championships, the prestigious season ending women’s tennis event. The Mobile Event Guide is a free mobile application that fans can download onto their mobile phones, allowing them to access all that is best about a sport’s programme and local travel and tourism information without the inconvenience of searching and downloading individual web pages for information. The Mobile Event Guide is the first service of its kind that is updated via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to include real-time information.

“Sony Ericsson continually strives for new ways of using its technical innovation to enhance the experience for those attending Sony Ericsson sponsored events. The Mobile Event Guide will enable fans at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha to access an easy-to-use, free service offering an indispensable guide to the tournament and city. We look forward to rolling out the application in the future for a variety of spectator events”, commented Aldo Liguori, CVP and Head of Global Communications and PR, Sony Ericsson.
The Mobile Event Guide is driven on a Java ME (J2ME) mobile application running on the JP-7 and the new JP-8 Java platform. The application is self-contained so does not require a data connection through the day, however with the use of wireless technology, the application can be adapted to receive live feeds, giving up to the minute information.

Advances in technology will enable the Mobile Event Guide to be adapted to meet the needs of event-going spectators by providing them with a palm-sized passport that includes event-guides, preferential entry and live feeds of the latest information.  Fans entering the stadium in Doha will be greeted with a message from Sony Ericsson inviting them to download the application via Bluetooth. The Mobile Event Guide will then be updated intelligently each day; when the same spectator arrives the next day the application will be replaced with an updated version with new content, preventing expensive data or roaming charges. The technology is available to most Bluetooth enabled phones, meaning spectators will have the ability to download a version of the application that suits their mobile phone at specially designated Sony Ericsson kiosks in the stadium.

Integral to the player and official version of the Mobile Event Guide is the Capuchin firmware, Sony Ericsson proprietary technology, which allows a much richer, intuitive user interface that is seamlessly combined with low-level phone functions.

Players will have a personalised Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot phone with a special Capuchin version of the application that will provide them with not only a much richer user experience but additional features including live updates to information such as latest match statistics and personal schedules and maps of the stadium, using the new wireless feature of the Cyber-shot phone.

Sony Ericsson expands its sustainability credentials with the launch of its environmental warranty and the GreenHeart phone and it means that now, when any Sony Ericsson product is taken to a designated collection point, Sony Ericsson will recycle this product in an environmentally sound way. This warranty is valid globally, regardless of where the product was originally purchased, as Sony Ericsson strives to show its support for ‘individual producer responsibility’ (IPR).

Sony Ericsson has long-since participated in and supported the development of common industry systems that relate to the collection and recycling of old mobile phones and accessories. Launching its own collection points and system means that Sony Ericsson will be able to further strengthen its commitment to taking responsibility for the products it sold to consumers.

This new initiative has now been initiated in India, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Singapore USA and Mexico. To date, more than 500 collection points are already in operation. Sony Ericsson intends to complete this rollout by 2009 in all the countries in which it operates. The company’s solely-owned collection points will be primarily made available in those countries where the current industry-standard system of phone recycling have been judged to be too limited.

Sony Ericsson also plans to develop the way in which it spreads information about this new initiative through its customer help desks and over the internet. The aim is to give consumers easy access to information on their nearest recycling drop off point.
As a company that puts environmental sustainability at the heart of its product development, Sony Ericsson wanted to explore new ideas in this area through a concept design study.

The GreenHeart is a full concept with all life cycle in mind it includes features such as bio-plastic housings, recycled plastic keypads, zero charger with 3.5mW standby power, HTML based e-manuals, a game style educational application ‘Ecomate’ and environmentally conscious packaging.

This concept has been shared with a few selected partners in the industry, whose response has been extremely positive. Sony Ericsson will therefore take this concept and initiate a two-way conversation with customers on what features they believe should be implemented in future phones and in what priority.

Environmentally, all of Sony Ericsson products live up to the extremely high standards that are expected by the industry. Pursuing policies such as the global phase out of unwanted substances, and being a leader in charger performance, is included in all our current product offerings. This is also recognised by external organisations worldwide, with Greenpeace, for example, naming Sony Ericsson as the ‘greenest electronics company’ for 2008. With the GreenHeart concept however, Sony Ericsson is looking to the future, to ensure the full life cycle of a mobile phone can be made more environmentally friendly. Once the technology reaches maturity, new techniques and materials will then be included in the portfolio and a market wide launch. One ‘eco’ product by itself will not make a difference but by learning through this concept study we are ensuring the entire portfolio in future will be more sustainable.

Sony Ericsson announced the launch of PlayNow plus, a super-fast, high-quality music download service for Sony Ericsson customers, available for use on both phones and PCs.  The service is due to launch commercially with operator Telenor in Sweden in the fourth quarter of this  year, with further roll-outs around the world beginning in early 2009. A special edition of the Sony Ericsson W902 Walkman phone will be the first product released with an integrated PlayNow plus service.

PlayNow plus is due to set a new standard for the unlimited mobile music experience, with unrivalled download speeds, high-quality audio and access to the largest music catalogue of any unlimited download service. The service draws from Sony Ericsson’s collaboration with Omnifone and licensing terms have been agreed with all major international music labels—including EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music – as well as thousands of local music labels.

PlayNow plus will guarantee truly unlimited, ‘all-you-can-eat’ access to millions of music tracks. While in the service, subscribers will be able to recommend their music tastes to others in the PlayNow plus community, and at the end of their contract they will keep a number of tracks—DRM-free—from their most played favourites.

PlayNow plus is designed as the world’s easiest unlimited music service to manage as whatever you do on either your phone or your PC may be reflected on the other device.  To add to the discovery and community aspects of PlayNow plus, TrackID charts, generated by Sony Ericsson consumers around the world, are also included. To kick-start the PlayNow plus experience right out of the box, Sony Ericsson plans to include, as part of the service, up to 1000 of recent popular tracks, both locally and globally, with each PlayNow plus phone.

PlayNowarena expands

PlayNow arena, Sony Ericsson’s multimedia service which launched successfully in the Nordic countries on August 25th, will now also be opening its doors in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland in the fourth quarter this year. On board for the expansion and adding to the music offer in the existing PlayNow arena markets is Universal Music Group with its massive catalogue that includes many of the world’s best selling artists. This important addition also means that PlayNow arena will be one of the first legal music services in these markets to offer DRM-free music from all of the major and independent labels.

"The launch of PlayNow arena is a milestone in a la carte music services to mobile phones”, said Rob Wells, Senior Vice President, Digital, at Universal Music Group International. The combination of TrackID and the variety of digital products on offer through PlayNow arena is a highly compelling proposition on its own, but when the full track downloads are available DRM-free, the offer is even more compelling for consumers."

Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Creation & Development at Sony Ericsson comments on the market expansion and catalogue addition:
"Expanding our PlayNow service portfolio by adding PlayNow plus and by launching PlayNow arena in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and the UK during the fourth quarter, are key elements of the Sony Ericsson service strategy. These steps and the addition of Universal's catalogue to the music offering in both services gives us every possibility to provide customers and consumers with what we feel is important and requested - an unparalleled user experience on Sony Ericsson devices."

Two propositions

PlayNow plus is the ideal service for the casual listener offering unlimited access to every kind of music and the freedom of discovery.

PlayNow arena provides the full range of mobile entertainment: an unparalleled mobile games offering; unique themes and wall papers; traditional and specially developed ring tones and music tones; a wealth of free content and of course; DRM-free music tracks and TrackID charts from around the world.  PlayNow arena is the one-stop-shop for the collector and is open for everyone.
