Today UIQ Technology announced the availability of UIQ 3.3. It's based on Symbian OS v 9.3 build, making it possible for mobile phone manufacturers to produce different kinds of phones on the same software platform.
It looks like that the new version of the long awaited Opera Mobile 9 will be incorporated in UIQ 3.3. New UIQ includes an extensively enhanced version of Opera browser (9.5) with an improved user experience of browsing on the mobile phone including faster page loads, a new layout engine and a new intuitive user interface including page overview and panning. It also includes a Widget Manager making it possible to see, run, download and remove widgets on the phone.
Some new abilities of the UIQ 3.3:
Full web experience: Opera Mobile 9, with its fast page rendering and its Pan & Zoom functionalities, offers the web experience of a full-scale browser in a mobile environment
UIQ Dashboard: UIQ 3.3 is prepared for mobile widgets and features a dashboard, accessible system wide by pushing the widget button
Opera Widgets: Opera widgets run on UIQ 3.3, offering the user direct access to content and opening up for new mobile services
Unified Messaging Platform: integrated communication experience
Java JSR 248 MSA Fullset: Developers can create and deploy a wide range of applications using the Mobile Services Architecture (MSA)
Except of those new futures, UIQ 3.3 opens some new opportunities for developers too.
Antony Edwards, Vice President Developer Product Marketing, Symbian, said:
"UIQ 3.3 will bring a host of new opportunities for developers wanting to innovate on a powerful user interface platform, including new APIs such as SQL. Symbian OS v 9.3 strengthens the offering for handset manufacturers with its robust and scalable OS, enhanced phone performance and hardware capabilities, allowing them to bring differentiated phones to market more quickly."The beta version of the SDK for UIQ 3.3 on Symbian OS v 9.3 is already available for downloading on developer.uiq.com
To mark the forthcoming Sony Ericsson Open, which starts tomorrow, the tournament celebrated by hosting the world’s first ever game of tennis on water.
Two of the World's leading tennis players, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal, took to a custom-made court to try their luck on a more challenging surface than usual, completing a seemingly impossible task more befitting a miracle than to a modern day tennis tournament.
The revolutionary game took place at the top of the new Gansevoort South Hotel as it officially opened its doors for the first time. The water-covered court was constructed in the 110ft swimming pool set in the Gansevoort's exclusive 22,000sqft rooftop retreat overlooking Miami's South Beach.
The court took seven days to build as a specialist underwater team constructed two invisible platforms at either end of the pool for the players to stand and play using a combination of bespoke acrylic sheets and supporting acrylic tubes that were bonded together. The pool was then filled with water before adding the finishing touches of a net and Sony Ericsson Open ball girls and boys.
The Sony Ericsson Open is the World's fifth largest tournament and the only 12-day tennis event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendars. The event, which takes place from 26th March – 6th April features all of the world's top-ranked men and women players.
Defending Sony Ericsson Open Champion, Serena Williams, commented: 'It was a once in a lifetime chance to play tennis on water and it was great to be involved in a true world first. Playing against Rafa was a new challenge, but I think the surface helped to level the playing field - particularly as he volunteered to play at the deep end!'
Rafael Nadal commented: ‘I love playing on ALL surfaces, but this was different and playing against Serena made it even more special. Playing a game on water was a first for me, and I also liked the setting here in Miami overlooking the ocean since I love the sea."
Dee Dutta, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications added: 'We've pioneered a few World firsts - Night Tennis at the Sony Ericsson Open last year, tennis on a football pitch at Real Madrid CF at the Sony Ericsson Championships, and now a game of tennis on water. With this amazing game we hope we have created excitement around the world ahead of the Sony Ericsson Open.'
Sony Ericsson is committed to bringing entertainment, innovation and glamour to tennis by creating a unique sporting spectacle. Sony Ericsson strives to energise the fan experience at the Sony Ericsson Open and to take the excitement of the game to new audiences.
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications announces that Dee Dutta, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing, has decided to leave the company on 31st March 2008.
Dee joined Sony Ericsson in 2002, and since 2003 he has held the role of Head of Marketing. During his time at Sony Ericsson he has built the marketing organisation throughout the company, and under his leadership the Sony Ericsson brand has climbed to No 2 in Brand Purchase Consideration. Through the sponsorship of tennis, particularly the Women’s Tennis Association Tour, he has extended the reach of the Sony Ericsson brand across the world.
Commenting on his departure Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson, said, “Dee has made an outstanding contribution to the growth of the Sony Ericsson brand and our sponsorship in tennis. We would like to wish him the very best for the future.”
Dee Dutta, commenting on his departure, said, “This has been a wonderful journey of both personal and professional growth for me. I am very proud of the achievements that my team and I have made in growing the brand and look forward to the next challenge in my career.”
Dee’s replacement as Head of Marketing will be announced in due course.
...Recently some new pictures and specifications of Sony Ericsson's upcoming device with codename "Emelie" have been leaked on the Internet.
It looks like that the handset is from a low/mid range and is based on the A200 operating system. It's equipped with a display of QVGA resolution (240 x 320 pixels) with 262k colors and 2 MP camera without Auto Focus... The housing of this device is made of metal and the price of this baby is expected to be from 150 up to 300 euros.
As you can see those pictures are not showing anything much and I guess it comes in handy only for the affirmation of its realism.
That's all for now, but i guess update of the information will be available sooner than we expect, so stay tuned ;)

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications announces that moderating sales growth of mobile phone units is expected to negatively impact net sales and net income before tax (“NIBT”) for the first quarter of 2008. Slowing market growth of mid-to-high end phones in markets where Sony Ericsson has a strong presence is affecting sales. In addition, certain component shortages for popular mid-priced phones have contributed to modest unit sales growth in the first quarter.
“As discussed during our fourth quarter 2007 Media and Analyst Call, the market is proving to be challenging. This has been more pronounced in the mid-to-high end replacement sector of the market in Europe, where Sony Ericsson has stronger than average market share,” says Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson. “For the last year, Sony Ericsson has been focused on expanding the breadth of its portfolio and developing its presence in new markets to lessen its historic reliance on the European high-end sector for growth. This strategy will continue, and our objective remains to become a top three player globally by 2011. As part of this strategy, we have announced fifteen new phones and introduced a new platform to the portfolio, Windows Mobile®, this year. We expect to start seeing a positive effect from these announcements during the second half of 2008.”
Although final results may differ, Sony Ericsson now plans to ship approximately 22 million phones during the first quarter of 2008 with an estimated ASP (Average Selling Price) of EUR 120. This is expected to generate net sales lower than the first quarter of 2007, and NIBT is estimated to be in the range of EUR 150 – 200 million due to increased R&D expenses as a percentage of sales. The increased investments in R&D are in line with the company’s strategy to meet future growth ambitions. In addition, Sony Ericsson currently expects gross margin to remain relatively stable for the first quarter of 2008 compared with the first quarter of 2007.
Sony Ericsson plans to announce first quarter 2008 results on April 23rd.

If you remember, there were some rumors in the Internet that the upcoming version of the Internet browser for mobile smarphones - Opera mobile 9.5, would not be available for older UIQ 3 phones (I mean Sony Ericsson P1i, W960, P990, e.t.c.). People were speculating that the new version would be only for new handsets, like Sony Ericsson G900, G700 or other upcoming phones and that was very bad news for me.
You see, I'm a lucky owner of the Sony Ericsson P1i and I'm using Internet quite often and efficiently on this handset and as we know Opera Mobile is not replaceable in such cases (OK I know, I know that there is also Opera Mini too... But there are some web sites which are simply unusable in Opera Mini)... So i was very happy when I saw this video on the zdnet blog.
This video is demonstrating some new features of the upcoming Opera Mobile 9.5 and guess what? It's running on Sony Ericsson P1i :)
Can’t wait to try it out.

"I'm not scared about anybody," - "The real question is how do they do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We've been doing this for two years and it hasn't been easy."I think realization of the PSPhone is under a big question mark, but it seems that Nokia looks at it in another way, or why to loose time for comments like this? And maybe it's not easy for Nokia, but for SONY? I don't think so :) The matter is that, if PSPhone will be released, first strike will be on Nokia's N-Gage platform. But while we are reading yet another rumors about PSPhone, meanwhile, Nokia is preparing to commercially release the new N-Gage application for its N82 and N95 handsets, adding it to the N81.
